Annan is a delightful market town in Dumfries and Galloway. From the time of the Romans through to the Wars of Independance, Annan has played a major role in the history of Scotland. The family of King Robert the Bruce had a castle here and there is a statue on the town hall to commemorate this great man. Other notable residents of Annan inlude the Victorian satirical writer Thomas Carlisle and of course Scotland's national poet Robert Burns who worked as an Excise Man along the Annan coast.
Annan hosts a variety of events from beer and folk festivals as well as the traditional Riding of the Marches. Dating from the time when Annan was made a Royal Burgh the tradition of The Riding of the Marches can be traced back more than 600 years. Each year over 100 horsemen and women ride the boundaries to check the landmarks that mark the old Burgh. On Riding of the Marches day a parade of decorated floats and children in fancy dress goes through the town. Sports, side shows and other entertainment are held in Annan Academy Sports field. The highlight for many is the massed pipe bands which play with the Annan Town Band in the closing ceremony.
Annan is very proud of its musical heritage having the Royal Burgh of Annan Pipe Band and the Annan Town Brass Band, both of whom are doing very well in their respective competitions. Annan will now host the British Pipe Band Championships in 2010, 2011 and 2012 - the first of these championships was held on Saturday 26 June 2010. 2010 was a great success - book early to ensure you have local accommodation at Ravenswood House.
Annan is also a great base for active sporting pursuits such as walking, cycling, shooting, rugby football and golf. Having such a rich history the area is festooned with Castles and Museums. The area also has an abundance of wildlife including the renowned Caerlaverock wild foul sanctuary.
